Steve Ellis, singer for the British pop band Love Affair, died Oct. 30 at 76 from complications of a chronic illness, Greg Evans reported for Deadline.
Deadline reported that his death was announced on his Facebook page. In the outlet’s account of a family statement, Ellis, who lived in Brighton, England, died peacefully with loved ones present.
Love Affair’s 1967 recording of “Everlasting Love,” a cover of Robert Knight’s song, reached No. 1 in the UK but did not chart in the US. The recording’s instrumental backing came from session musicians rather than the band members, a revelation that caused a stir in the UK. Ellis sang the lead vocal.
The band had three other UK Top 10 singles in 1968 and 1969: “Rainbow Valley,” “A Day Without Love” and “Bringing on Back the Good Times.” Ellis left for a solo career in 1969, then recorded and performed for decades, often with reconstituted versions of Love Affair.
