Peacock’s “Crystal Lake” turns the “Friday the 13th” mythology into an eight-episode origin story centered on Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini. Variety reports that the A24-produced series opens in 1972, eight years before the original film, and follows Pamela through the aftermath of her son Jason’s drowning.
Created by Brad Caleb Kane, the prequel expands a character who had limited screen time before Jason became the franchise’s masked killer. The A.V. Club notes that the series traces Pamela’s grief and rage while reworking parts of the established timeline, including the year of Jason’s drowning.
Early reviews agree that Cardellini is the main draw, even when the season sprawls. Variety calls the series thoughtful but overlong and praises its performances, while The A.V. Club finds it grisly, uneven and watchable, with Cardellini anchoring its mix of psychological thriller and slasher violence.
All eight episodes premiere Oct. 15 on Peacock. DiscussingFilm also praised Cardellini, but found the season messy, saying its final stretch makes the prequel’s biggest swings land.
