Xbox’s next console, Project Helix, reportedly targeted for holiday 2028 with a $1,200–$1,800 internal consumer price projection

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma plans to release a next-generation handheld by the 2027 holiday season and the next console by the 2028 holidays, Fortune reported on Oct. 20, 2026. Fortune describes hardware as one focus of her broader Xbox strategy, alongside player experience, major franchises and updates to its technology.

The next console, Project Helix, has an internally projected consumer price of $1,200 to $1,800 unless Microsoft decides to subsidize the cost, Fortune reports. The range is a projection, not an announced retail price.

Fortune says Sharma has worked with designers, including Carl Ledbetter, on Helix prototypes and potential partnerships. The report also describes a dispute over software for the next-generation hardware: Windows leaders wanted a trimmed-down version of Windows Home for the handheld, while Sharma’s team sought to build its own software for gaming performance. Fortune says Xbox now largely controls the project’s operating-system direction, though Sharma emphasized that the Xbox and Windows teams still collaborate.
