Variety reported that Apu returned to speaking in the Oct. 18 episode of “The Simpsons,” “The Revengening,” marking the character’s first dialogue since the October 2017 episode “The Serfsons”. Actor and voice-over performer Sunil Malhotra now voices Apu, a role previously performed by Hank Azaria.

The return follows years of debate over Apu’s stereotypical portrayal, including the 2017 documentary “The Problem With Apu.” Variety reported that Azaria later said he would no longer voice the character, who continued to appear occasionally but remained silent while the show’s producers considered how to handle him.
Malhotra told Variety that he researched the role and met with showrunner Matt Selman and co-executive producer Cesar Mazariegos before accepting it, describing the process as collaborative. Selman said Apu, his wife Manjula and the Nahasapeemapetilon family will be seen and heard more often. Janina Gavankar made her debut as Manjula in the same episode.
