Disney’s 20th Century Studios survival thriller Whalefall opened to an estimated $8 million domestically and $9.5 million overseas, for $17.5 million worldwide, according to Exhibitor Relations and BoxOfficeReport.com. FilmUpdates and Exhibitor Relations each put the production budget at $60 million. The opening total is less than one-third of that reported budget, with the rest of the theatrical run still ahead.
Released in theaters Oct. 16, the film stars Austin Abrams as Jay Gardiner, a diver searching off California’s Central Coast for his father’s remains when a sperm whale swallows him. Trapped with one hour of oxygen, Jay has to draw on lessons from his father, played by Josh Brolin, to try to escape.
Director Brian Duffield co-wrote the adaptation with Daniel Kraus, whose novel inspired the film. Reuters reported that the survival setup doubles as a story about the turbulent bond between Jay and his father.
