Variety reports Cage said at New York Comic Con that he did not sign a waiver to allow AI use on “Spider-Noir.” He called Amazon “very AI-friendly” and said he would “probably not” work with the studio again. Variety also reports that Amazon canceled the series after one season in September 2026.

Nicolas Cage says his refusal to approve AI use on Spider-Noir may mean he’s finished working with Amazon.

Speaking at New York Comic Con on October 10, Cage said he declined to sign a waiver allowing AI use on the Prime Video series. He described a mismatch between Amazon’s enthusiasm for the technology and his own opposition, according to Variety.

“I am not an AI-friendly actor,” Cage said. “I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again, but that’s okay.”

His comments arrive a month after Prime Video canceled Spider-Noir after one season. The series, which cast Cage as a private investigator and superhero in 1930s New York, earned 11 Emmy nominations and recorded 2.6 billion viewing minutes in its first six weeks, according to Nielsen figures reported by TheWrap. The reporting does not establish that Cage’s refusal to sign the waiver caused the cancellation.

Cage’s concerns about digital control of his performances predate the show’s release. In a July 2024 interview with The New Yorker, he discussed upcoming scans for television and film work and worried about how his likeness could be used after his death. His concern extended beyond physical resemblance to whether technology could preserve—or replace—the human choices behind a performance.

At Comic Con, Cage also pointed toward the collaborators he wants to work with next. He praised younger filmmakers, including Backrooms director Kane Parsons, and expressed interest in directors building careers through YouTube and hands-on filmmaking. He also teased a role in HBO’s True Detective, though HBO had not confirmed his participation when Variety published its report.
