Tom Cruise's "Digger" tracking for soft $15-19M opening as Warner Bros.' final standalone release

The Alejandro G. Iñárritu satirical drama with a ~$125M budget is projected for a weak domestic opening weekend, with $1.2M in previews. Critics are divided on whether it's a misunderstood masterpiece or overly preachy, marking WB's last film before Skydance/Paramount merger integration.

TLDR

The film tests whether audiences prefer entertainment-focused blockbusters or heavy satirical commentary on corruption and elitism amid real-world concerns. It represents a significant moment for Tom Cruise's post-Top Gun: Maverick appeal and signals the end of an era for Warner Bros.' independent theatrical slate before corporate restructuring.

@monsterhunter45This comment is from a post about how Digger is about to mega bomb at the box office. Somehow this dude's description makes me want to watch it even less, and that was already a low bar. That pitch is like perfect anti-marketing. "Trust me, guys, this movie is gonna beat you over the head about global warming and how much America sucks! Oligarchy! Patriarchy! Dying polar bears! Insufferable pretentious film school grads are gonna talk about this at Manhattan cocktail parties for years to come! Now go spend $40 at the movie theater to self-flagellate for two hours." Gee whiz. I can't imagine why this one is gonna bomb! It's sad too because Tom Cruise is talented and he's coming off of Top Gun Maverick which made tons of money because it was the polar opposite kind of pitch. "Hey guys, come watch a fun movie where good guys fight bad guys with amazing shots of awesome fighter jets. America! Fuck yeah!" One of these things is obviously not like the other, and yet somehow Hollywood is still baffled by the results. And ironically, of the small amount of money Digger makes this week, I bet a large percentage of that will come from people who didn't know they were going to an angsty social commentary movie, and they just went to see the one with Tom Cruise in it because of goodwill left over from his previous, non-preachy movies.6h
