Richard Riehle, the character actor who played Tom Smykowski in “Office Space,” has died at 78. Variety reports that he died of natural causes Oct. 15 in Los Angeles and says it confirmed his death.
In “Office Space,” Smykowski is an Initech product manager who loses his job, survives a hit-and-run and uses the resulting settlement to build a “Jump to Conclusions” mat. Variety recounts the character’s story.
Riehle’s work extended well beyond that film. Variety says he appeared in more than 400 films, television shows and other projects, including “Bridesmaids.” He played Walt Finnerty on “Grounded for Life” and appeared across the “Star Trek” franchise, including as Batai in “The Next Generation.” Variety reports that he is survived by his wife, Jane Latham, and their four children.
