Simon Stone’s Elsinore opened the 70th BFI London Film Festival with its European premiere at the Royal Festival Hall on Oct. 7, according to the BFI. Andrew Scott, Billie Piper and Olivia Colman were among the cast members at the opening-night screening, where Deadline reported Scott received a standing ovation.
Scott stars as Ian Charleson, the stage actor who prepared to play Hamlet at London’s National Theatre while living with AIDS. Stone directed the film from a screenplay by Stephen Beresford, and Scott also served as a producer. The cast includes Piper, Colman, Johnny Flynn, Luke Thompson and Joe Locke.
At the premiere, Deadline said Scott asked the house DJ to play a disco version of Ethel Merman’s “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” saying the song best “encapsulates” Charleson. Focus Features planned a select-theater U.S. release for Nov. 20, with Studiocanal set to release the film across the U.K. on Jan. 29, 2027.
