Variety reported that Bird joined Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson and composer Michael Giacchino at Royal Festival Hall. The screening fell on Giacchino’s birthday, prompting Bird to invite Johansson and Rockwell into a quick rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

Set in retro-futuristic Metropia, the film follows private detective Raymond “Ray” Gunn and his alien partner Eye-Ra as they are pulled into a conspiracy involving pop star Venus Nova, according to DiscussingFilm’s review. It will play select theaters on December 4 before reaching Netflix on December 18.

Scott Menzel@ScottDMenzelRAY GUNN is an animated film noir brought to life by the one and only Brad Bird. It gives off Who Framed Roger Rabbit vibes while fully embracing the noir genre. Sam Rockwell is very good as the voice of Ray, but Scarlett Johansson shines the brightest as Venus Nova. The animation is gorgeous throughout and I felt like the story only got stronger and more engaging as the film went on. Michael Giacchino’s score is also quite good, and the original songs were quite catchy and fun. #RayGunn3h
