Syria submits ‘The Other Side of the Sun’ for Best International Feature at the 99th Oscars

Deadline reports that Syria selected ‘The Other Side of the Sun’ as its candidate for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards. It is Syria’s first submission since Bashar al-Assad’s ouster in December 2024 and the first choice by its newly established Oscar committee. Director Tawfik Sabouni, who was imprisoned at Saydnaya, returned there with other survivors; the film uses reenactments to convey their memories.
