@Cinema_Odyssey_‘GODZILLA MINUS ZERO’ has now climbed to 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, putting it on track to become one of the highest-rated sequels of all time. The film is the first Godzilla movie to receive an R rating for violent content and bloody images, as well as the first Japanese production filmed entirely in Japan to be released as a Filmed For IMAX title. Set two years after the war left Japan devastated, the film follows a nation struggling to rebuild when Godzilla suddenly returns, bringing an even greater threat of destruction. Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also oversees the film’s VFX. ‘GODZILLA MINUS ZERO’ hits theaters November 6.4h

@Okuta_iyebiye97% on a couple dozen festival reviews is impressive, no argument there, but calling it on track for one of the highest-rated sequels of all time feels a bit early. Toy Story 2, Paddington 2 and a handful of others sit at or near 100% with far more reviews in the bank, and those scores actually held once the wider critic pool weighed in. Minus One itself is still sitting at 99% and won the VFX Oscar, so the bar here is ridiculous. A few of the early write-ups already say Minus Zero is bigger and meaner but doesn’t quite hit the same emotional or inventive peak. If the score settles in the low-to-mid 90s once more people see it, that’s still excellent for a kaiju sequel. It just wouldn’t be historic. Also, Rotten Tomatoes percentages can look more decisive than they are when the sample is small and mostly from the premiere circuit. Curious whether this one stays that high once the November wide release reviews land, or if we get the usual slight drop. Either way, an R-rated Yamazaki Godzilla with Ghidorah in the mix is getting my money regardless of the final number.3h
@FreeadditionYeah, 97% looks mad right now, but it’s only off 31 reviews so I’m not fully sold yet. Minus One was already ridiculous at 99% with way more people weighing in, so this hanging right under it while being the first R-rated one and shot for IMAX is still wild to me. Most of the reviews I’ve seen treat it as bigger and more emotional than the last one, and the fact Yamazaki’s still handling the effects himself is properly impressive. A few of them are pretty clear it doesn’t quite hit the same highs though, and the Metacritic number’s sitting lower, which is usually what happens when it’s still early and mostly festival stuff. Calling it one of the highest-rated sequels ever feels like a stretch at this stage. Plenty of films sit at 99 or 100 with way bigger samples. Still, a Japanese monster movie clearing this bar while Hollywood keeps missing it is the bit that actually gets me. Audience score’s still empty, so that’ll probably tell us more once it actually opens in November.3h
