CD Projekt Red wants its live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie to tell a new story in the game's universe rather than retell the game's story, IGN reports.

CD Projekt RED does not want its live-action Cyberpunk 2077 project to directly retell the game's story. Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski told PAP Biznes that the company wants to tell a story in the Cyberpunk world, not translate the game plot one to one. IGN summarized the plan as moving away from another telling of V and Johnny's story.
The project was announced in 2023 as an early-stage collaboration with Anonymous Content that was searching for a screenwriter to create a brand-new story in the game's world.
Nowakowski said that agreement has expired and that CD Projekt RED will pursue the live-action project in a new format with Paramount Pictures. He added that the companies will share more details when both sides are ready.
