TLDR

Variety reports that the ‘Lanterns’ finale reveals Hal Jordan’s killer and the Manhunter, has Sinestro create the Yellow Lantern, and powers up John Stewart for a ‘Superman’ sequel. DC says all episodes are streaming on HBO Max. Reactions diverge: a Vulture recap praises the show’s introspective drama, while another viewer calls it a poor Green Lantern adaptation.

@Geekol0gyJohn Stewart’s new oath: “In brightest day, in darkest night, I’ll embrace my fear. I’ll do what’s right. I choose this ring. I choose this fight, in service to this lantern’s light.” And I think one line is especially important: “I’ll embrace my fear.” To me, this does NOT mean John is becoming a Yellow Lantern. Throughout the finale, the dominant visual language is still green. The Forge’s smile, the Lantern, and most importantly John’s ring itself still glow green. The Yellow Corps has not been created yet. It has not even been officially established within the DCU at this point. It may very well exist in Sinestro’s future plans, but we are not there yet. So when John says “I’ll embrace my fear,” I don’t read it as “I will use fear as my source of power.” I read it as: I will stop fighting the fact that I am afraid. I will accept my fear, face it, and transcend it. John’s entire journey has been about breaking away from conditioning — from what his parents expected him to be, from what the Guardians wanted him to become, and from the idea that fear itself is something that must simply be erased. He is basically saying: I’m no longer afraid of being afraid. That is very different from surrendering to fear. He acknowledges it, integrates it, and moves through it. So for now, I don’t see John as a Yellow Lantern or as someone already belonging to another Corps. I see him as something more interesting: an independent Lantern. Still carrying a green ring. Still connected to the Lantern legacy. But operating under a different philosophy, with a different relationship to fear, willpower, and choice. That may be exactly what sets up the John Stewart we could see next in Man of Tomorrow. #lanterns #greenlantern #yellowlantern3h
@SiddhantAdlakhaLanterns Finale Recap: In Brightest Day Is this the best superhero show? Pretty handily. It’s also one of the best things on TV right now, period, with some of the most wrenching, introspective drama you’re likely to find. A pretty stunning adaptation. https://www.vulture.com/article/lanterns-finale-recap-season-1-episode-8-hbo.html3h
@RichardLNewby3A lot I loved about that finale. On an emotional/thematic level, the stuff with John, Noah, Kerry, Hal, and Sinestro is great. Can’t fully get on board with DCU’s depiction of Guy (he never feels like a real person imo). Didn’t need extortion girl. Strong series tho! #Lanterns2h
