Variety reports that HBO has greenlit a five-episode limited revival of “Girls,” with production scheduled to begin in 2027, 10 years after the sixth-season finale. The original series ran from 2012 to 2017 and followed a group of friends navigating their 20s in New York City.
Lena Dunham will return as Hannah Horvath, joined by Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson and Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro. Andrew Rannells will also reprise his role as Elijah Krantz, according to Deadline.
Dunham said the team had always planned to revisit the series only if they had a specific story they felt compelled to tell. She said the characters came back to her around her 40th birthday. HBO comedy chief Amy Gravitt described the new installment as shifting the show’s focus from the turmoil of the characters’ 20s to the milestone of turning 40.
Judd Apatow returns as an executive producer alongside Dunham, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells will serve as co-executive producers.
