Former MLB Player Found Guilty of Obstructing Justice and Lying to Federal Officials Investigating Illegal Sports Gambling Ring
A former Major League Baseball player, Yasiel Puig, was found guilty of obstructing justice and making false statements to federal officials regarding his involvement in an illegal sports gambling ring. Puig, who played for several MLB teams, admitted to placing bets on sporting events through an illegal gambling operation, accumulating a debt of nearly $1 million. Despite being warned about the consequences, Puig lied to federal agents during an interview and also provided false statements during his naturalization process. Puig faces up to 10 years in prison for obstruction of justice and up to five years for the false statement charges.
