A primary reason Digg is needed
Simply put, Reddit has become insufferable. It’s nearly impossible to have healthy discussion or disagreement. Everyone is so trained to need to “win” the conversation, frankly I’m at a point where I just enjoy and appreciate having conversations and I sense there are others like me.
If we can somehow latch onto that and build the platform in such a way to encourage and maximize that (and subsequently, discourage the negativity in other ways than just removed posts or bans) then I truly think Digg can thrive long term. The two can also completely coexist.
As such, this is a non-fleshed idea with plenty of opportunity to poke holes, but I’d like to propose a negativity score feature for user profiles.
It will need to be a weighted algorithm so that 1 disliked post doesn’t ruin your score, but this then provides a means for building on top of that data with platform and/or community wide filtering. Sort of like muting people, they still have a voice but if they can’t find a way to do it in a healthy way they will be screaming to nobody. Imagine a community where you could talk about politics in objective and healthy ways without extreme left/right wing abrasiveness.
I’m sure there are ways to gamify or exploit this, but maybe the inception of the idea will lead to something awesome.
