The Range Differences Between A Full EV Charge And A Full-Tanked Gas Car, Visualized
A 2022 EV mobility study revealed that 52 percent of car buyers want either a fully electric or a plug-in hybrid/hybrid powertrain as their new car.
However, two of the major concerns people have that make them apprehensive about EVs are the lack of charging stations and range anxiety.
Using data from the International Energy Agency and the US Deptartment of Energy, Govind Bhutada, Clayton Wadsworth and Athul Alexander visualized the progress that EVs have made.
Key Takeaways
-
The maximum range of an EV in 2022, on one charge, is approximately 520 miles, or 837 kilometers. In comparison, a gas powered vehicle could go nearly 765 miles, or 1,231 kilometers, on a full tank.
-
Factors that affect range include temperature, high speeds and braking. Temperatures below 20β (-6.7β) and high speed driving can result in a loss of range, whereas regenerative braking may extend it.
