The Range Differences Between A Full EV Charge And A Full-Tanked Gas Car, Visualized
Electric vehicles still fall short in range when it comes to a full tank of gas, but development has been rapid over the past decade.

A 2022 EV mobility study revealed that 52 percent of car buyers want either a fully electric or a plug-in hybrid/hybrid powertrain as their new car.

However, two of the major concerns people have that make them apprehensive about EVs are the lack of charging stations and range anxiety.

Using data from the International Energy Agency and the US Deptartment of Energy, Govind Bhutada, Clayton Wadsworth and Athul Alexander visualized the progress that EVs have made.

Key Takeaways

  • The maximum range of an EV in 2022, on one charge, is approximately 520 miles, or 837 kilometers. In comparison, a gas powered vehicle could go nearly 765 miles, or 1,231 kilometers, on a full tank.

  • Factors that affect range include temperature, high speeds and braking. Temperatures below 20℉ (-6.7℃) and high speed driving can result in a loss of range, whereas regenerative braking may extend it.

I just completed a trip from LA to Nashville and back and paid less than $5 for charging. The extra time needed to get to a charger and wait for charging was worth it. I'd rather have the inconvenience than pay $100 for each tank of gas.

There are a great many issues with EVs. Least of all is the fact that they are not affordable nor are they mature. Government subsidies needed to make them affordable make them a boondoggle.

  3. Please tell me what Fuel driven cars have a range of 765 miles from 1 tank full. Also, what Electric car has a range of 520 miles per 1 charge. These numbers are nowhere to be found on any vehicles I have researched!

Increasing max range is only important to a point. Much more important is going to be charging speed.

    1. I believe that the more important point would be how much further driving is wasted looking for a place to charge an EV. Gas stations are everywhere.

When making range comparisons take into account that filling up takes a few minutes, but charging takes a while.
