Shrinking value and a problematic CEO haven't stopped Tesla from ranking as America's most popular EV company.

Despite the negative press surrounding Tesla and its chaotic (and highly problematic) CEO Elon Musk over the last 12 months, it appears the electric car company remains America's go-to for EVs.

Using data from Cox Automotive’s Kelley Blue Book, Statista ranked the best-selling EVs for the first nine months of 2022.

Tesla sold 191,451 and 156,357 of its popular Model Y and Model 3 cars, respectively, between January and September of last year. Trailing behind in third place is the Ford Mustang Mach-E, with 28,089 sold in the same period.

Tesla unlike all other car manufacturers, does NOT release monthly sales figures. The numbers used in this article are unverified and unofficial.

Tesla has lost market share of the EV market see NY Times "Tesla Car Sales Grow Slower Than Expected, Amplifying Concerns" Forbes Tesla continues to dominate EV sales, with 65.4% of the EV market. However, that is down from 68.2% in 2021 and 79.4% in 2020.

With the market growing, Tesla is still rapidly growing its vehicle sales despite its loss of market share. But, there are reasons for concern.

    PROMOTED

Tesla failed to meet Q3 estimates with 343,000 vehicles delivered versus street estimates of 358,000. The company blamed the highly challenging environment for transport and logistics, and there is certainly truth in that statement.

Auto News 11/22/22 Tesla losing EV market share to sub-$50,000 rivals
Tesla dominates EV sales but is losing market share to more affordable EVs from competitors, including Ford and Hyundai."

Consumer Reports "Best 10 Cars for 2023" has a BMW EV as #1. No Tesla has made any top ten list produced by any auto publication or testing service.

For context - Tesla sold about 400,000 vehicles in 2022. VW, Toyota and GM each sold about 12 MILLION. EVs remain a tiny - but growing - share of the market.

Tesla can not will not be able to compete with the amalgam of competitors which include Ford, GM, Hyundai, Jaguar, BMW, Toyota, Honda and so on. There are now dozens of models to choose from at lower (and higher) prices than Tesla which are cheaper to maintain, service and insure.

The best selling vehicle in America for a decade is the Ford 150 truck. Trucks yield far more profit per vehicle than cars. ALL the major manufacturers have EV trucks on the market already.

Should show numbers month by month as the other manufacturers are ramping up EV production. EV sales in the US are still only ~6% of US vehicle sales.

Tesla is the only company that does not release monthly sales figures. Gear heads and car guys like me know that there is no GOOD reason not to do what every automaker has done in the USA for decades.
