Study Illuminates the Genetic Architecture of Bipolar Disorder - National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
The largest-ever genome-wide study of bipolar disorder reveals new genetic insights, identifying nearly 300 gene locations and 36 unique genes linked to the disorder. The study, involving 158,036 people with bipolar disorder and 2,796,499 without, suggests genetics play a key role in the disorder's variability and could lead to more targeted treatments.
If there was ever an appropriate time for a TL/DR, it’s a NIH paper.
Essentially, they compared the DNA of a lot of people with bipolar disorder to people without it and found a lot more genetic markers than they expected. This strongly supports the idea that bipolar disorder is rooted in biology and is not caused by personality, character, or life mistakes (no shit).
They also saw that bipolar shares some genetic traits with conditions like depression and schizophrenia, and that different types of bipolar are not all the same genetically. No changes in treatments because of this, but it’ll probably lead to better treatments over time.
