macOS Finder PSA: You Can Finally Resize Column View to Fit Filenames!
As someone who primarily has Finder in column view, this makes me sooo happy!
I wish there was a bigger announcement about this because I didn't find out about it until I was reading some tech blogs. I linked to the MacMost video because that's the most relevant link that actually tells you how to do the thing, which I think most people would be interested in. (Also because Gary's content is awesome, and I've been using him as a reference to learn Apple stuff ALL the time!)
But I'll also provide the primary sources that I brought this to my attention:
MacMost — Resize Columns to Fit Filenames (same as the thumbnail link block)
Jeff Johnson — macOS 26.1 new feature: Resize columns to fit filenames
Michael Tsai — from the comment section on this post on macOS 26.1
This article explains how a new setting in macOS Tahoe 26.1 allows Finder Column View users to automatically resize columns to perfectly fit folder and filenames. The setting is found in View > Show View Options Controls and is called Resize columns to Fit File Names. Once enabled, the columns will resize to the perfect width, eliminating the need to manually adjust them. However, the setting has some limitations, such as not resizing columns when turning Show Icons on or off, and hitting an upper limit for very long filenames.
