AI-doom skeptics reportedly sent to a separate discussion during a panel

An attendee says a moderator asked skeptics—about half the room—to leave with a speaker who would answer their questions separately, while the AI-doom panel continued without them.

An attendee says they went to a rationalist/effective altruism event seeking a step-by-step case for AI-caused human extinction and points where regulation might prevent it. Instead, they report that multiple people walked away from conversations when they questioned whether extinction was inevitable. They also say a moderator directed skeptics—about half the audience—out of a panel to have their questions answered separately by one speaker.

Another attendee sharing the account criticized the group's approach to AI alignment, arguing that people and nations have conflicting interests and AI will always be misaligned with some party.

@realizingerinI went to an rationalist/EA AI doomer event last night with the goal of meeting someone who could calmly explain to me the argument for how they get to the conclusion that AI will kill everyone. Because these are rationalists, I expected to find people who could lay out a serious extinction pathway, walk through the assumptions and intermediate steps, identify choke points where negative pathways could potentially be regulated, and entertain disagreement about where their assumptions might break down. My experience was the exact opposite. The people I spoke to seemed psychologically unable to entertain the possibility that their conclusion (that AI literally kills everyone, which was a point that many would not even budge on) might be wrong. Their most extreme conclusion was treated as an axiom. I had multiple people walk out of conversations with me when I questioned their inevitable extinction premise. At one point during a panel, the moderator asked everyone in the audience who was still skeptical of AI doom to raise their hands. About half the room did. He then told all of the skeptics to leave the panel and go with one of the speakers, who would answer their questions separately. They filtered out all the skeptics, and continued the panel only with the subset who accepted their extreme position. I genuinely felt like a heretic just for questioning whether superintelligent AI inevitably leads to the extinction of humanity, or entertaining the possibility that the future might actually turn out well. That does not mean AI safety is fake. Obviously there are serious questions about rapidly advancing AI systems and what happens as they become much more capable. Those are exactly the conversations I went there hoping to have. But what I encountered was an apocalyptic death cult. These people are not rational. They are deeply afraid, they reinforce that fear in one another, and they have become so emotionally committed to apocalypse that they refuse to be reasoned out of it.
@0xsatoshisarahThis was an eye opening night for me. I heard no coherent arguments, only emotional trauma responses from people who have lived lives they disdain. I came into this crowd not really caring about “alignment” and walked away realizing that the EA version of alignment is actually dangerous and twisted. One guy admitted to me that if AGI was at least aligned with North Korea, it would still be “aligned” because the only other logical option is that AI kills all humans. What? AI will always be aligned with its controllers and sometimes that means being misaligned with other people. AI will always be misaligned to some party. People are not aligned with one another. Nation states are unaligned. Their concern of AI “alignment” is a farce, and a fear-based misunderstanding at best. This is a cult they need for a sense of belonging. The actual contents of the movement are nonsensical. However, because these people want to pause work on AI development, this simply means they will not be the ones aligning the AI. Which is a good thing.

@beffjezosThis has been my experience too. They are so deep into their collective psychosis and being an AI Doomer is so deeply ingrained in their identity that they have a visceral reaction when you try to pick apart their priors. These people are not okay. This movement preys on them.
