    TLDR

Gary Marcus, a cognitive scientist and author, posted on X that he grows more confident generative AI will be seen by decade's end as a tragic and costly mistake overall. He added that the view should not halt work on better AI methods that deliver stronger results both technically and politically. The post comes from his public record as a critic of deep learning and current large language models.

@GaryMarcusNobody can predict the future with perfect accuracy, but I am increasingly confident that by the end of decade, generative AI (at least we know it) will be viewed as on balance a tragic, costly mistake. I hope this will not stop us from finding better ways to do AI — technically and politically — that are more net-positive for society.
@dileeplearningI'm increasingly confident this won't happen.
