Microsoft Plans Maia 300 Inference Chip for Multi-Gigawatt Deployments in 2027

Microsoft claims Maia 300 delivers about 40% more useful computing per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems, a user says.

TLDR

A user citing Reuters says Microsoft plans to put more than a million AI chips to work in 2027 and expects Maia to run AI in its products rather than train models. The user says Microsoft's claimed efficiency gain has not been independently tested and argues that power constraints make efficiency important. Maia could give Microsoft more bargaining power with Nvidia, the user says, though Microsoft still buys Nvidia and AMD chips.

Lumirit@LumiritXMicrosoft wants to put more than a million AI chips to work next year. None of them would be Nvidia's. That's the plan it laid out Monday for Maia 300, its third-generation homemade AI chip, per Reuters. Microsoft expects Maia to become the main system running AI inside its own products, the everyday work of answering questions and doing tasks, rather than training new models. The pitch is efficiency. Microsoft says Maia 300 delivers about 40% more useful computing per megawatt than "leading GPU-based systems." It didn't say which ones, and nobody has tested the claim independently. A Maia rack holds 96 chips and draws about 167 kilowatts, versus 72 GPUs and about 142 kilowatts in Nvidia's GB300 rack. Power is the bottleneck in AI right now. Data centers can't get electricity fast enough, so a chip that does more per megawatt can be worth more than one that's simply faster. Nvidia slipped about 1% on Monday while Microsoft rose about 1%, though Nvidia had other worries that week too. I don't read this as a crisis for Nvidia. Microsoft still buys Nvidia and AMD chips, and it expects more than $175 billion of capital spending this calendar year. A million Maia chips is a slice of that, not a replacement. But it changes the negotiation. Nearly every giant Nvidia customer now has a homemade chip or is building one. A buyer with a real alternative pays less. Nvidia's sales can keep growing, but $NVDA's fat profit margins depend on customers like $MSFT having no good alternative, and Maia 300 is the clearest sign yet that the biggest buyers plan to have one.1h
