Before James Simons left academia to start his hedge fund, he was deeply immersed in geometry and topology. In 1974, Chern and Simons collaborated to publish a landmark paper. Together, they introduced what is now known as Chern-Simons theory (or Chern-Simons forms).
Originally a purely mathematical construction in topology and differential geometry, Chern-Simons theory unexpectedly became the mathematical foundation for much of modern theoretical physics, including quantum field theory, string theory, and condensed matter physics.
