    TLDR

Nolla Health announced a Utah pilot for AI-generated first prescriptions and renewals for topical acne treatment in adults. Two independent physicians must initially review every prescription, and later stages require written state approval. The company advertises enrollment, but Utah's public register still lists the demonstration period as not started. The agreement grants limited regulatory relief and explicitly disclaims state endorsement of the product.

Nolla Health announced a Utah pilot on Oct. 5 for AI-generated initial acne prescriptions, with physicians involved at every stage. The company says Utah residents 18 and older can enroll through its Nolla Derm app, which combines an intake questionnaire with photos of the patient's face.

The state's agreement permits first prescriptions and renewals within a restricted topical acne program for eligible Utah adults. Its clinical scope covers mild or moderate acne and excludes oral acne medication, isotretinoin and treatment of severe acne.

    Physicians review prescriptions first

In the initial stage, two independent Utah-licensed physicians must review each prescription before it is submitted. That stage runs for at least four weeks and includes at least 100 patients. Later stages allow prescriptions to be sent with review afterward, eventually moving to monthly sampling.

Progression requires written approval from Utah's Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy. The agreement sets performance and safety gates, including physician agreement targets and checks for serious adverse events. These are requirements for advancement, not published results establishing that Nolla has already passed them.

Nolla says patients can message a licensed physician through the app. Its announcement also describes ongoing skin scans and treatment-plan reviews after every 28 scans.

Company and state records differ on timing

The Utah pilot register lists Nolla's agreement as signed Sept. 22, but still says its demonstration period has not started. Nolla's Oct. 5 announcement and product page advertise the pilot as available.

The agreement defines commencement as making the technology available to customers and notifying the state in writing. The inspected public material does not resolve that timing discrepancy or establish approval for a later oversight stage. The agreement also explicitly distinguishes regulatory relief from a state endorsement of the product.

@omarsar0A big milestone for AI in healthcare. @nollahealth can now use AI to prescribe acne treatment in Utah. The AI handles intake, a skin scan, assessment, prescription, and follow-up, and a clinician steps in when needed. Starting with acne makes sense to me because it is common and relatively low risk. Very excited about AI-powered personalized healthcare. I have personally benefited from AI for health, so it's awesome to see this progress.1h
@svpinoThis is the first AI-led prescription and treatment app on the market (at least that I know of). It helps treat acne. And it's happening here in the United States (Utah)! • You scan your face and answer a few questions • The app gives you a personalized plan • It gives you a prescription if necessary • It tracks your progress and adjusts over time You also have access to a physician at no extra cost.1h
