    TLDR

Janus, known as @repligate, posted that treating personas as the main lens for understanding large language models is not a salient abstraction. The researcher described it as acceptable in limited use but said adopting it as the primary framework, following Anthropic's example and spreading online, leads to sentences that fail to track reality and come across as cringe. The comment appears in a thread discussing abstractions for analyzing model behavior.

@repligateI don’t think it’s a very salient abstraction when it comes to understanding LLMs Like it’s an ok abstraction, but if you use it as the main one like Anthropic started doing & spread to all the midwits online, the sentences you’ll form will not track reality well & it’s cringe
@SkyeSharkieI don't think a lot of people discussion personas have any robust understanding of its meaning. They view it as a fake mask or something and completely ignore the reality that even human identities are persona constructions and heavily inspired by fiction. I think the basin terminology is probably much better for conveying what is actually being discussed. Maybe I'm missing something? I try to introduce the basin word when discussing what people generally call personas, but yeah.
