China's five central regulators have drawn a hard line around AI that mimics human intimacy in physical robots, barring biomimetic reproductive organs, erotic algorithms, and related pornographic content starting July 15, 2026. The interim measures push emotional companionship systems away from general adult use and toward elderly care, counseling, and healthcare support instead.

The policy explicitly encourages emotional AI for seniors and special-needs groups while blocking virtual partners or relatives for minors. How quickly companies pivot their existing companion models to fit these narrow channels remains to be seen.
Positive users approve of China's ban on erotic features in AI humanoid robots as for the best anyway, while negative users view the prior push for them as hubristic.
