Outside of China, there are no good open source models. We don't even have any in the US now.

The talent, the capital and the focus to be best-in-class at pre-training, mid-training, post-training is an extremely scarce skillset.

I'd be pleased to see a project like this succeed, and I can see why the idea is attractive, but I think it's a mistake to emphasize the federated-ish approach and that doing so will ultimately limit the project's overall impact.

None of the problems I'm talking about are insurmountable, but it does seem like it will be a continual source of inefficiency and friction for the lifetime of a project like this.
