A front-loaded related-work table drew the only clear accept in one reported AI-review test

A user says four other related-work formats scored around weak accept or weak reject under an ICLR 2027 rubric.

    TLDR

A user says they tested five ways to present a paper’s related work with GPT-6.1 sol high + work mode, using an ICLR 2027 rubric. Only the version that put related work up front and added a detailed table comparing prior papers with their own received a clear accept; the other four scored around weak accept or weak reject. They argue that spelling out those differences early may help avoid a novelty criticism from an AI reviewer.

@feijianghanJust rewriting related work was enough to flip an ai reviewer from weak reject to accept! tl;dr if you want to be safe during the ai-review era, have your related work at the beginning and explain how your work differs. during the days of human-reviewers you could get away with having your related work be pretty concise. usually near the end or even in the appendix for most method/analysis papers. this is because humans like to read things when they're not interrupted. this becomes an issue once your reviewer is a LLM tried a paper with iclr 2027 rubric (had 2 major weaknesses) and changed how my related work was formatted. here are my results. 1. related work (rw) up front, concise 2. rw up front and added a detailed table of previous paper/my paper/how they differ 3. rw later, concise 4. rw later, detailed 5. rw later, concise. linked to longer version in appendix only #2 got a clear accept, the other four were all around weak accept / weak reject. i then went through the reviews to see what was happening: if related work doesn't fully spell out how you differ from prior work, a novelty weakness is basically guaranteed. the AI reviewer really likes citing papers i already cited and using them to say the idea isn't new. not hard to rebut but the reviewer may not change their initial scores, so you dont want this to happen on the first pass. i tested this with gpt-6.1 sol high + work mode, which is probably close to the strongest ai review setup i can use right now. even there, i still saw a pretty strong bias against important distinctions that appear later in the paper.1h
