    ICLR 2027 Sets Authorship Quotas for Submissions

    New rules also restrict authors without prior major ML conference acceptances to one paper.

    TLDR

    The ICLR 2027 Author Guidelines state that no author may appear on more than 20 submissions. Authors without a paper previously accepted to a major machine learning conference are limited to one submission. The conference posted the rules on iclr.cc. Posts on X quote the guidelines directly and share screenshots. One analysis of ICLR 2026 data found 101 authors exceeded 20 submissions that year. Academics on the platform noted the second limit may affect students from fields where advisors are not routinely added as co-authors.

    @thegautamkamathICLR 2027 has authorship quotas: - No more than 20 submissions per author - No more than 1 submission where no author has a paper previously accepted to a major ML conference
    @chhaviyadav_Wow so there exist a significant amount of people who coauthor more than 20 submissions 🤯 that's crazy even with agents..
    @ziv_ravidIt should be no more than 5 submissions per author 😒
    @SoloGenWriting a sole-authored paper was used to be a badass thing; not it is a cringe! Too bad! I had one or two in mind.
    @francoisfleuretGradient clipping.
    @CSProfKGDRT @thegautamkamath: Some are understandably upset by the latter policy. Those on the other side may get it. TMLR submissions have 4x'd, la…
    @AlexGDimakisI would support even stronger quotas: No more than 5 submissions per author sounds reasonable. An author is someone who has supposedly authored, at least part of a paper. Also, authors should be evaluated by their best papers, not how many they got through the process. When I see faculty candidates or researchers with 10-15 papers in one conference, it now counts as a negative signal to me.
    @roydanroyICLR capped submissions to 20 papers per author. This is ridiculous and will slow down AI progress. 👎👎👎 Why 20? This is an arbitrary number, and with AI agents 🤖 able to complete interesting if incremental work 🔨 in AI with little guidance , we should be encouraging everyone to complete and submit as much as possible 🔥💪🦾, especially since all reviewing is now handled by LLMs (...admit it). @minilek@thegautamkamath The second one seems to harm students who come from fields where adding advisors as co-authors isn't the norm (e.g. theory).
    @delipraosupport this wholeheartedly but at the same time it has an intellectual socialism aftertaste
