David Sacks argues Anthropic uses fear-based messaging to drive state AI regulations that harm startups

Story Overview

David Sacks has dusted off an October 2025 X post to restate that Anthropic's safety warnings amount to a calculated push for state-level rules that would burden smaller AI teams while shielding established players, a claim now echoing louder in June 2026 as federal versus state policy fights intensify.

Anthropic is running a sophisticated regulatory capture strategy based on fear-mongering. It is principally responsible for the state regulatory frenzy that is damaging the startup ecosystem.

State rules could squeeze smaller players

Sacks ties Anthropic's messaging to a wave of state AI bills that raise compliance costs, an angle that leaves open how much the company's stance actually drove those measures versus broader political momentum.

Open Question

Federal stance remains unclear

The accusation lands while Sacks serves as White House AI czar, yet no explicit administration policy has been tied to his personal framing, leaving the next moves on preemption versus state action unresolved.

Sentiment

Some users praised David Sacks as a hero for accusing Anthropic of regulatory capture via fear-mongering while others insulted him personally and dismissed the claim as lies or competition-driven.

@DavidSacks I wish it were just a strategic business move to cut off competition. It goes deeper. And C.S. Lewis has the words for it-

@DavidSacks Dario constantly warmongers and stirs up conflict with "Authoritarian governments" but says absolutely nothing about tens of thousands of EU and UK citizens being arrested for social-media posts. Laughable hypocrisy.

Looks like that prediction aged well. Question is do the political powers that be see it, and if so do they care enough to prevent it from happening?

The best way forward is multiple companies in competition. Regulatory capture and crowing a "winner" via regulatory capture would be a disaster.

You’re 100% right, David. They are just scaring the shit out of people, and it’s straight Orwellian. They get to capture a very large contingent of the left and the right who are so skeptical of AI, and that is why Bernie and AOC are running circles around everyone trying to ban data centers and AI progress. I don’t know what Anthropic will eventually achieve by giving so much power to these politicians. Well, they may be the only AI company in the United States, but the rest of the world is not gonna stop innovating, especially China. They will just easily overtake and say bye-bye on the way.

@DavidSacks Anthropic and Dario need to be stopped. They are the evil villains.

He’s playing the most dangerous game in tech. Becoming enemy #1 in AI imo.

AI is going to kill your jobs. So here, Goldman and Blackstone, have the job killer.

AI is too risky for the public. Watch me hand the strongest model ever to 12 corporations and select partners.

AI needs regulation. Translation: regulate it so only we can play.

We decided which ideas are unsafe. So you get throttled and won’t even know it’s happening.

Open competition is dangerous. A startup is dangerous.

A Chinese open model is somehow safer are more free than American, which is wild to me.

Effective altruism’s final form: let Dario be king, for your own good.

@DavidSacks Otherwise there’s no robust discernible edge that will stand the test of time w/out blocking other out… look at how they came out of nowhere and the flip flopping between LLM leader models, cost / token

@DavidSacks No. You’ve had your target on Anthropic because they are woke. Elon has done far more fear-mongering, but you won’t ever talk about that because he’s on your side.

@DavidSacks @csentropy Time for regulators to step in somehow, if the technology is as dangerous as Dario says it is, but a regulator should step in and relieve him of his duty, he’s gone completely off the rails, he’s going through rapid bipolar cycling, he’s completely fucking insane.

@DavidSacks I used to get exhausted by Dario’s constant parroting of my job going obsolete. Now I realize it’s the only play he has left. Labor is winning the war.
