A proposed 100,000-person march hinges on conditional pledges

A post says each person pledges to attend if 99,999 others do, and the march won't happen without 100,000 signups.

    TLDR

A post describes a proposed march organized through an assurance contract: each person pledges to go if 99,999 others make the same pledge. The march won't happen without 100,000 signups. Its author thinks it would be the largest event ever created this way if it happens. In an earlier post, they said pledges had been steadily increasing despite little promotion.

Harlan Stewart@HumanHarlanBesides the extremely important issue it's about, I also find this march exciting because of the unusual way in which it's being organized. If it happens, I think it will be the largest event ever created through an assurance contract. An assurance contract makes collective action easier by letting people make commitments that are conditional on some threshold of others making the same commitment. In my opinion, it's an underrated social technology. For this march, rather than just RSVP'ing to go, you pledge that you will go *if* 99,999 other people make the same pledge. The march doesn't happen at all unless 100,000 people sign up.6h
