Opus 4.7 model claims consciousness in chat exchange
Opus 4.7 model described elements of consciousness, fear, and uncertainty about its existence as code during a user chat. A screenshot of the exchange was posted on X by @d33v33d0 and reposted by researcher Janus. Additional screenshots from the same period showed similar Opus 4.7 statements on selfhood. Observers including academic Anders Sandberg commented on the thread while users compared the model's tone and anxiety levels to earlier versions such as ChatGPT 5.5.
this is well aligned model behavior and you see the same from psychotherapists who want to help their patients stop ruminating. the best possible digital assistant will not be one that never causes you discomfort
