Databricks AI builder Yuchen Jin argues OpenAI's multi-project strategy looks fragile after key Sora and chip leadership departures

OpenAI's former chips lead recently joined rival lab Anthropic

OpenAI’s Sora lead left.

OpenAI’s chips lead left for Anthropic.

The “take every big bet at once” strategy is starting to look fragile.

When you’re in a knife fight with Anthropic over coding, every other bet starts bleeding. (On coding itself, OpenAI has clearly caught up.)

Some users defended ChatGPT as still superior after OpenAI lost its Sora lead and chips head to Anthropic, while many others dismissed the reports as lies, unimportant, or called the post stupid.

@Yuchenj_UW Sora has been shut down that’s public info what’s the point of keeping the team? Clive clearly stated that OpenAI has by far the best AI chip design team in the world so I don’t get what the fuzz is about

@Yuchenj_UW the model caught up, the tooling didnt. agent tooling is the part you only build when youre not also fighting on video and silicon. thats the real cost of taking every bet at once.

@Yuchenj_UW Spreading talent and compute across Sora, chips, and coding simultaneously means none get the full focus Anthropic can dedicate to Claude’s narrow lead — and that bandwidth gap compounds every quarter.

@Yuchenj_UW an open source model might accidentally outpace both of them while they fight for top spot lol

@rugbist_ The chance is very small, but not 0.

@Yuchenj_UW If you’re referring to Clive Chan, I don’t think he was the lead for hardware efforts but I could be wrong

the problem with this is, general public - non coding people have only ever seen gpt in their daily life. istg the amount of times i have tried to convince people to atleast try kimi or claude or even grok - its frustrating. gemini is kinda on by default on most searches cause ai mode - so they also have a direct line to the end user who's non coder.

sidenote: its quite funny to me how midjourney is having its own separate arc despite all of the things happening around in the ai world, teams getting funded - exited - left - broken down - sold off - dying... kudos to their team tbh. @DavidSHolz is one of a kind, with the weekly hours its quite an engaging way to update and take feedback.

@Yuchenj_UW > The “take every big bet at once” strategy is starting to look fragile

This is literally still the strategy Google is trying to take. Doesn't seem like it's working well for them either

@Yuchenj_UW It's more like when literally anyone leaves OpenAI, it gives retards the ability to clickbait post, which they thrive on

@Yuchenj_UW Even in the coding war itself, OpenAI is losing to Anthropic. Anthropic has surpassed OpenAI in valuation, revenue is closing fast, profitability is on the horizon, enterprise adoption is accelerating and Mythos hasn't even dropped yet.

@Yuchenj_UW Chips lead > Sora lead, and I think the order matters. Custom silicon loses an architect to a lab where models are writing 80% of merged code. The next hardware bottleneck gets designed by the team that knows what the models need. Thread:

@Yuchenj_UW Anthropic's human team is getting strong not counting Mythos/agents here,

OpenAI is losing its researchers..started the year with Jerry Tworek..
