First impressions of Tonal's digital resistance and workout modes

A user says Tonal's digital resistance felt odd, but its spotter, burnout and SmartFlex modes won them over.

TLDR

After a first workout with Tonal, a user who has used traditional gym equipment since 2018 said its digital resistance felt strange but they liked the experience. They praised spotter mode for helping them push to failure alone, burnout mode for lowering the weight when they're tired, and SmartFlex for adjusting it based on effort. They said Tonal was expensive and that they had not yet tested its other modes.

Santiago@svpinoToday, I did my first workout using Tonal. I've been working out since 2018 with traditional gym equipment, and I honestly expected Tonal to be gimmicky. It is not. I actually liked it a lot. Here is the thing: although digital resistance feels weird compared to the real thing, Tonal's built-in intelligence makes up for it in spades: • You get spotter mode, so you can push to failure when working alone, like I always do. • You get burnout mode, so the machine adjusts the weight down when you are gassed, so you can keep repping out. • You get smartflex mode, so the machine auto-adjusts the weight (up or down) based on how easy/hard it is for me. There are a few more modes, but I haven't tested them yet. Let's see how it feels over the next few weeks, but so far, I'm really happy with this thing. I'm not sponsored by Tonal in any way. I bought mine after testing it at my friend's house. It's freacking expensive, but I'm sure I'll make good use of it.1h
