A proposed AI benchmark: building an operating system from an old research paper

A user proposes buying a PC and testing how far AI can get in implementing an operating system described in an old research paper. The AI would run on a separate computer so it could debug and reboot the target machine. In a follow-up, the same user suggests a tougher starting point: a directory containing the paper and a prompt to implement it in QEMU, then walk the user through getting it running on hardware and debugging it.
