An a16z partner calls for nationalizing frontier AI labs

A commentator rejects the nationalization proposal but backs its broader distinction: strict controls on frontier AI and a lighter touch for other AI work.

    TLDR

An a16z partner argues that the Department of Energy should nationalize frontier AI labs to put their high-risk work under appropriate controls, leaving other developers to build AI that automates menial tasks and cures people. A commentator sharing the proposal describes it as a sharp shift from a16z’s earlier opposition to frontier AI regulation. The commentator rejects nationalization but supports strict controls on frontier AI and lighter regulation elsewhere.

@S_OhEigeartaighUp until this year a16z were working harder than anyone to oppose regulation of frontier AI. Today, an a16z partner is calling for frontier AI companies to be nationalised in order to work on the scary stuff safely with the right controls. While I don't agree with the call for nationalisation any more than I agreed with the next-to-no-regulation call (and I'm worried about the wide swings), it's good to see them updating in the face of growing evidence. Moreover, the general point - very strict controls on frontier AI, much lighter touch for everything else so they can get on with building useful AI - is one I've strongly supported for a long time, and that interestingly matches well with the motivation behind past efforts like SB-1047 etc. I think it's right.
