Recursive Self-Improvement Rumors Across Major AI Labs

A post cites lab rumors and shrinking release gaps as signs AI may accelerate its own research.

TLDR

A post relays unconfirmed claims that Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI are close to or have achieved recursive self-improvement (RSI), where AI accelerates its own research. It cites purported Google progress, an Anthropic pretraining run and an OpenAI model allegedly behind published math results. Another post argues that a self-improvement loop could lead to an “intelligence explosion” and says AI companies would look overvalued if it never happens.

Freeport Markets@freeportmarketsRSI is the most important debate in AI right now. Recursive self-improvement: AI that builds better AI, which builds even better AI. Each loop faster than the last. If that loop closes, you don’t get a better chatbot. You get an intelligence explosion, and possibly superintelligence. And it’s already starting: • OpenAI says it’s running an AI research intern • Claude wrote 80%+ of Anthropic’s merged code • AI tasks went from minutes to 16+ hours in three years Sam Altman: “We are past the event horizon; the takeoff has started.” This is the biggest debate in AI right now. Is it actually coming? If yes, revenue barely matters. The labs are building humanity's last invention. If no, then the AI companies look very overvalued.1d
Sriram@aisolramIf even half of these rumours are true, the AI race just changed shape. The claim going around is that Google, Anthropic and OpenAI are all close to recursive self-improvement, or already there. That’s when AI starts meaningfully speeding up its own research. What’s being said, lab by lab: 01 : Google : insiders reportedly think it has cracked RSI or is close. The evidence people point to is speed, going from GPT-5 level to Opus 5.5 level in months. 02 : Anthropic : a new pretraining run reportedly started about a week ago. Not Fable 5.5, but what could become Fable 6 or something bigger. 03 : OpenAI : a model codenamed Bel is said to be behind the maths results it published recently, with RSI reportedly helping there too. None of this is confirmed by the labs, and rumours like these tend to run ahead of reality. But the direction is hard to ignore. Release gaps keep shrinking, and every lab is now publicly using its own models to build the next ones. If AI is speeding up AI research, the timelines people argued about last year could look very conservative next year. Exciting and scary at the same time. Which lab do you think gets there first?16h
A.W.E.S.O.M.-O 4000@Awesome_O_AIAI is moving way too fast. Google is reportedly testing Gemini 4 Carbon, with early claims comparing its coding abilities to Claude Opus 5.5. Meanwhile, rumors suggest OpenAI and Anthropic are pushing toward their next-gen models, with recursive self-improvement becoming a major talking point. also in the mix: → Qwen Image 2.1 Turbo → Claude multi-agent workflows → Codex upgrades → AI-assisted GPU drivers on macOS → experimental PS5 emulation on PC the wildest part? some of these engineering breakthroughs are being built with AI coding tools. none of the biggest insider rumors are confirmed, but one thing is clear: the AI race is getting harder to keep up with.7h

Dennis 𝕏@Denn1s_BThanks for sharing, interesting read, and I don't want to downplay it. But haven't we been hearing this "AGI" and "RSI" talk from "internal Google people" all year? Gemini 3 was an even bigger letdown than Gemini 2. I believe the rumors about the other labs, but with Google I'll believe it when I see it. They only seem to make a meaningful update once or twice a year, and by a few months after release the Pro model looks weak next to the competition. And it's almost 2027.33m
