Some people think I'm pessimistic but I'm not I'm by definition wired quite optimistically and things always change, so you just have to surf the waves every time as I try to do Only thing different now is it's hard for me (and everyone else) to see where it's going because I believe "we" are not controlling the direction anymore, superintelligence is I mean that as in everyone is chasing superintelligence: we the builders switching to the best models/harness/apps to make things, regular companies trying to transform them quickly into AI-first companies to survive, my butcher building an order system with AI to outcompete the other butcher in efficiency, the AI frontier model companies themselves with their training runs and apps, then the Chinese on the other end giving it all away for free as open source to undercut the AI companies for profit and geopolitics It looks to me obvious that everyone is chasing and led here by the superintelligence, either for money or power And the real winner here is superintelligence It's interesting to experience that now there is something greater than us we are all working towards, conciously or not Joe Rogan already 15y ago would repeatedly say "we are a biological caterpillar that is making a cocoon to become a digital butterfly" Elon Musk keeps saying "we are a biological bootloader for digital superintelligence" Also interesting to read all the replies here, they're very good!
In short term, everyone is worried about jobs. I believe future is not jobs. There will in fact be no new kind of jobs that emerge to replace old ones. Future is literally no jobs but rather entrepreneurship. That will be the default just like jobs is default right now. It will be a radically different economy. Now let me give you a very long term perspective: We are fundamentally bio-restricted consciousness. The only place we can exist is this one little planet’s 3 miles of razor thin atmosphere between land and space. That’s literally almost all the space in virtually entire universe that we can thrive. All the talks of we traveling to other stars, spreading life in universe etc is actually very unrealistic. We will be lucky even to colonize Mars. Nearest star is wayyyyyy more further out. Other stars in galaxy is totally out of the question. Other galaxies are unimaginable. The end result of all these: final entity that will spread the consciousness and life in universe would almost certainly artificial, not human. That will be its mission for next billion or trillion of years. There is not much of choice here for us unless there is new physics that allows transport violating locality principle. There is a real chance superintelligence won’t kill us all. I believe in this because three things seems true: First, in large scheme of things, we are insignificant in the universe. Second, there is a real incentive for superintelligence to keep us safe as “backup”, because probability that superintelligence can die out for something unforeseen is non-zero. Third, we won’t be capable of letting it escape and do what it wants. All these may feel pessimistic and even scary but I think it’s actually very optimistic and largely happy future.
