Boston University's Najoung Kim reports receiving 1,000 highly formulaic AI-written emails, sparking debate over automated professional outreach
Younger senders may not view automated outreach as unprofessional
@najoungkim I think there’s a subset of zoomers who think this isn’t a rude/weird thing to do. Obviously those are not the zoomers who are going to get places in life but still
in case this helps >0 ppl: if you're sending me AI written emails based on my website, im getting 1k other emails that sound exactly the same! maybe their goal is not to stand out but to cast a net for >0 replies, but sharing in case someone genuinely thinks it expresses interest
@najoungkim this was meant as a more general comment, I have received AI-generated messages professionally (from people I actually work with) and even socially sometimes. so I guess for those cold emails they genuinely don't think it's better or worse than writing their own email.
@tallinzen so either it has to be that: (1) these actually yield nonzero responses and my imagination is simply lacking or (2) they genuinely believe that it's a good strategy and don't realize that a million others are sending the same email but likely i'll never know the true answer
@najoungkim like I imagine there's a subset of the world out there where 25 year olds are having romantic relationships entirely through ChatGPT

@najoungkim I have a pretty wild story about this I'll tell you at the next conference
@tallinzen ah ok now i see your point! i didn't factor in this "it's just a normal way to talk and have social interactions for them" aspect. for this i'm definitely in the getting the ick crowd 😮💨 (for now)
