Why do LLMs seem unaware of time between messages?

A user says an LLM in a long-running chat seems to assume no time has passed, even when they return days later.

    TLDR

A user asks why modern LLMs seem unable to track time between messages. They say they revisit a long-running chat every few days, but the model appears to assume no time has passed since their last message. They wonder whether that would be easy to fix.

Dumitru Erhan@dumierhanWhy don't modern LLMs have an idea of the passage of time? I have a long running thread with one of them, that I jump in once in a few days, and it always assumes zero seconds passed since my last message. Trivial to fix, no??2h
Jon Barron@jon_barron@dumierhan Would be cool if someone RoPE'd the UTC time into the tokens.59m
Peter J. Liu@peterjliu@dumierhan fix is to have a loop report the time to the model54m
