Sakana AI releases The Agentic Scientist and AutoIllustrate as open source

Sakana AI says coding agents test hypotheses against preset standards, share results and check which parts of successful programs matter.

    TLDR

Sakana AI says The Agentic Scientist coordinates coding agents through research stages while humans set questions, choose directions and verify claims. It says an early version helped study Error Diffusion for a paper accepted as an oral presentation at ALIFE 2026. In autonomous runs, the system raised Doc-to-LoRA retrieval accuracy from 52% to 98% on multi-needle tasks. AutoIllustrate, also released as open source, makes scientific figures with editable draw.io files.

Rylan Schaeffer@RylanSchaefferOne puzzle I haven't cracked is why Sakana AI still has human research scientists after they automated AI research in their 2024 Nature paper 🤔2h
Robert Lange@RobertTLangeVery happy to share our recent work on The Agentic Scientist 🧑‍🔬, our next-generation system for orchestrating coding agents for automated scientific (co-)discovery. GitHub: https://github.com/SakanaAI/AI-Scientist-v3 Blog: https://pub.sakana.ai/agentic-scientist/ arXiv: https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.18933 Coding agents are powerful hill-climbers. But to illuminate the space of unknown unknowns, we need systems that can build on previously discovered knowledge, scale open-endedly with resources, and support human co-discovery and evidence-grounded communication. We hope that our system provides a step in this direction.1h
