    TLDR

Epoch AI posted its analysis of Huawei’s Ascend roadmap and domestic supply constraints. The institute concluded Huawei will deliver less than 4 percent of Nvidia’s AI compute in 2026. Chris McGuire, citing his earlier study, noted the same range of 2.1 to 4.1 percent for that year and described the two assessments as consistent. Jaime Sevilla retweeted the exchange. The attached bar charts in both posts show the projected gap widening when Huawei relies solely on its own HBM production.

@EpochAIResearchWill Huawei catch up to Nvidia by 2030? Almost certainly not. We analyzed Huawei’s chip roadmap and supply chain, from the Ascend 950 to its 3D-stacking bet and domestic HBM supply. Our estimate: Huawei will produce less than 4% of Nvidia's AI compute in 2026. Relying on domestic HBM alone, that share could fall to just 1% by 2028. 🧵
@ChrisRMcGuireGreat report by @EpochAIResearch on how much Huawei trails Nvidia in AI chip production. Their conclusions are also very similar to last year when I looked at this data, below. My report projected Huawei will make 2.1-4.1% of the AI compute of Nvidia in 2026; Epoch concluded less than 4%. I projected in 2027 it would be 1.1-2.2%, Epoch said under 1% in 2028. Despite the constant narrative being pushed by some that China is catching up to the US in AI chip production, the math very clearly says otherwise.
