Google DeepMind researcher criticizes classified Pentagon AI deal
Andreas Kirsch, a research scientist at Google DeepMind, publicly commented on the company's reported classified AI agreement with the Pentagon. Speaking in a personal capacity from his London residence, he told FAZ and Süddeutsche Zeitung that autonomous weapons, mass surveillance, and autonomous policing raise public-health and safety issues. Kirsch faulted companies for safety-washed PR that limits open debate on classified AI uses and noted uncertainty about next steps. Academic Dan Roy praised Kirsch for standing by his principles.
@BlackHC No one can fault you for not standing by your principles, that's for sure.

In a personal capacity, and not on behalf of Google or Google DeepMind: very glad I could speak with FAZ and SZ about Google's reported classified AI deal with the Pentagon.
Autonomous weapons, mass surveillance, and autonomous policing all concern public health and safety. They are matters of enormous public interest, not just internal policy debates.
Companies that should know better are using safety-washed PR that undermines the honest public conversation we need about AI in classified settings.
