    TLDR

Timothy B. Lee posted that doomers should not be too negative about the data center backlash against AI. He noted that while the movement is kind of dumb, mass movements often are, and it might still advance their goals. Eli Dourado replied that making anti-AI efforts a mass movement was a mistake from the start. Such movements lose control of the message, leading to assorted anti-AI outcomes that only barely and incidentally reduce existential risk. The exchange shows strategic disagreements among critics of AI development over using public backlash to data centers.

@binarybitsHonestly I think doomers are too negative about the data center backlash. They wanted a mass movement against AI. Yes this one is kind of dumb but mass movements usually are! It still might move the ball in the right direction, from their perspective.
@elidourado@binarybits From a doomer perspective, I think it was always a mistake to make it a mass movement. They will totally lose control of the message, and a bunch of anti-AI things will happen, but they will only barely and incidentally lower existential risk.
@TaylorLorenz@binarybits I just did a podcast episode talking about this! Agree
