    TLDR

OpenAI research engineer Kevin Liu announced the release of internal data on coding agents accelerating research. Charts track rising agent usage inside the company. Liu notes recursive self-improvement will likely drive future capabilities yet remains visible mainly inside frontier labs. He urges other AI companies to share similar data for public discussion on development pacing. Replies on X mixed praise for the transparency with skepticism over selective reporting and alignment risks.

@kliu128Today we're releasing data on models accelerating research at OpenAI. Recursive self-improvement could be the most important contributor to AI capabilities over the next few years, but by default it will only be seen inside a few frontier AI labs. Being transparent is more urgent than ever, so we can inform the public discussion on whether and how to pace model development. I ask other AI companies to do the same. https://openai.com/index/research-acceleration-view-inside-openai/

@boazbaraktcsUsing AIs to accelerate AI research ("Recursive Self Improvement") is one of the most important, yet by its nature least visible, elements for understanding AI's trajectory. I am glad that OpenAI is sharing some of the data on how AI is impacting our own research efforts.
@polynoamialOne of the most interesting blog posts we've released: details on internal research acceleration at @OpenAI. I expect these trends to continue. We also share some details on how we've paced model development to prioritize monitoring, alignment, and security.
@dylan522p@polynoamial @OpenAI I'm kinda surprised AI company employees use AI about as much SemiAnalysis employees now, but earlier in the year they used significantly less. IG y'all didn't have Claude Code then, but now ur models are better.
@omarsar0OpenAI just published its North Stars. All eyes are on recursive self-improvement (RSI), including self-improving research agents and personal AGI.
@oneill_cBoth the funniest and scariest part of this post is that the median researcher at OpenAI was spending $0 a day on coding agents in feb this year. So much for all the hype they generated around all models prior to then
@kimmonismusTo me, it currently reads as if the path to recursive self-improvement is relatively clear. The only problem is alignment. Looking at the exponential increase, practically the explosion, of AI agents within OpenAI, it's clear that this growth will continue. It's still unbelievable to me that we're on the cusp of an intelligence explosion, presumably the singularity. And yet, 99% of people outside the AI community are still unaware of this. To quote Demis Hassabis, we stand on the threshold of the golden age of science.
@Tim_Hua_I see that we’ve reached the “share important information 8am on a Sunday” phase of the takeoff.
@simonwInteresting details in here about how OpenAI researchers are using coding agents I'd love to know what caused the huge uptick in token spend in mid-July, was that when Astra became available to employees?
