AI safety as systems engineering versus an alignment problem

One post contrasts an engineering view built around clear trade-offs with an alignment argument: you can't make trade-offs on something you don't understand or control.

    TLDR

A post argues that a “huge disconnect” separates people who treat AI safety as systems engineering with clear trade-offs from those who approach it as an alignment problem, questioning trade-offs without understanding or control. A reply tentatively agrees, asks which side the author takes, and presses for how the engineering view explains what it calls “recent alignment incidents.”

@ChrisPainterYup@martin_casado Agree I think. Which side of this are you on? I'm assuming you're in the former camp, I'm curious how your POV explains the recent alignment incidents. Feel free to link me if there's something you've already written that explains
@omarsar0@martin_casado Field just needs to get back to the fundamentals. For a hot minute, I felt like there was some progress being made on safety/alignment (mechanistic interpretability). But all of a sudden, it became a tool for spreading fear, misleading the general public, and political agendas.
