Resurfaced claims that Dario Amodei called GPT-2 too dangerous to release spark debate over OpenAI's 2019 strategy
Story Overview
Old quotes from OpenAI's 2019 GPT-2 announcement have resurfaced and are being parsed again, this time as part of arguments about whether the lab exaggerated safety concerns to justify withholding the full model. The original post described the 1.5-billion-parameter system as capable of coherent text generation and basic zero-shot tasks, then chose to release only the 117-million-parameter version while citing risks of misuse such as fake news or phishing.
Primary sources tell a more nuanced story
OpenAI's own announcement framed the partial release as an experiment in responsible disclosure rather than an outright declaration of catastrophe, and no verbatim statement from Dario Amodei calling the model too dangerous appears in the primary materials. Commenters are now questioning whether later headlines hardened that language into something stronger than the lab originally wrote.
Staged releases still shape release norms
The 2019 sequence moved from the smallest model to selective partner access before the full weights dropped in November, yet contemporary reporting found little evidence of the feared misuse during the delay. That precedent continues to surface whenever labs weigh similar withholding decisions today.
Positive users defend Dario Amodei's GPT-2 caution and delay as justified or smart marketing, while negative users call him a clownish government puppet pushing needless safety fears.

Dario Amodei actually never made such statements
what you are showing is the framing of the press, which is of course clickbaity af

as a reminder, this was Dario saying this about GPT-2 back when he was at openai.

@Hesamation Anthropic needs to tell Dario to not speak publicly ever again, they did that to themselves
things Dario said: - “We’re not at a stage yet where we’re saying, this is a danger,” -“We’re trying to make people aware of these issues and start a conversation.” - On GPT-2 writing a strong essay: Amodei cautioned that this “only happens a small fraction” of the time. - On GPT-2’s unexpected translation ability: Amodei said it was nowhere near specialized translation systems, but that its ability to do translation at all was surprising. - later reporting also says Amodei personally pushed for caution: WIRED says he “urged people at OpenAI to not release the full model right away - “I didn’t know if this model was dangerous,” “but my general feeling was that we should do something to signpost that”

@handler_sn25912 why not? bro’s getting everything he asked for and willing to pay price by making everyone hate him

@Hesamation

@Hesamation Guess it's not the worst marketing method to hype your product up. Also telling people they cannot have something generally leads to more interest and a human desire to at least see it or find out more. If it's perceived as potentially dangerous it's even more provacative.

@Hesamation the mini models are more powerful than this now (LFM2.5-8B-A1B-GGUF) in 5 years we'll have fable class running in our gpus

@Hesamation Government puppet.

@Hesamation He's getting exactly what he wants and a lot of people are being played for fools.

@Hesamation Here lately I'm wondering if it's projection

@Hesamation This fucker has been doing this on repeat for years looks like. GPT-2 too dangerous... What a joke.
@BrianRoemmele Dario is such a clown. he postponed the release of GPT-2 because it could be weaponized for mass-scale fake news.
his problem isn't with AI, he is afraid of free people...

@Hesamation How does he keep attracting so many good people, though?

@Hesamation Anthropic set themselves up for this, first step was saying no to the gov, then when they did their idiot fear marketing camaign to promote the new model that gave the Trump admin perfect cover to ban it and basically take control of it. Now Howard Lutnick controls anthropic

@scaling01 all I know is he's saying for months (maybe even over a year now) SWE is solved and makes promisses which aren't hold at all.
I am predicting that even when fable is out there will not be a massive change at all.

@Hesamation We need to find all the quotes online with notes from each year that he said essentially the same thing. @grok search please. Reference each URL or image link you find.

@Hesamation thank god openai fired him and all those like him. safety nuts ruin everything

@Hesamation Now we can call him 'Mr too Dangerous'

@Hesamation And he was correct

@ccarp87 @Hesamation We wants Lutnick in charge of AI?
