Why did Waymo build small cars?

A museum visitor shares a secondhand explanation involving employees who allegedly ignored requirements to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

    TLDR

After seeing small Waymo cars at Silicon Valley's Computer History Museum, a visitor shared an explanation he attributed to the man who ran Google's R&D and funded the cars. According to that account, employees given full-size Lexus vehicles signed contracts threatening dismissal for taking their hands off the wheel and eyes off the road—but everyone broke the rule, from the CEO down. The visitor said lawyers' concerns about the unfinished AI led to the small cars being limited to 25 mph.

@ScobleizerThe guy who ran Google's R&D and paid for these told me that when they gave the full-size Lexus to employees, they had them sign a contract that said they would be fired if they took their hands off the steering wheel and their eyes off the road. Everybody broke the rule, from the CEO down to low-level employees. The lawyers realized they had a problem because the AI wasn't finished yet and could kill people if they did something wrong, so these cars only went 25 miles an hour and would never kill anybody.
